1. Acceptance of Terms

By downloading or using VocaRead, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

2. Description of Service

VocaRead is a mobile application that converts EPUB, PDF, and Kindle (MOBI/AZW3) ebooks, as well as pasted text, into audio using on-device text-to-speech technology. The app is available on iOS and iPadOS, with an Apple Watch companion app and CarPlay support.

3. User Content

You are responsible for the books you import into VocaRead. Ensure you have the right to read any content you import. VocaRead does not host, distribute, or have access to your books.

4. Free and Premium Plans

  • Free plan: 90 minutes of free listening per book, unlimited imports, all languages
  • Premium: One-time purchase via the App Store that unlocks unlimited listening

Premium purchases are handled by Apple and subject to Apple's terms. Refunds must be requested through Apple.

5. Intellectual Property

VocaRead and its original content, features, and design are owned by VocaRead and protected by copyright laws.

6. Voice Models and Generated Audio

VocaRead's voices are generated on your device by AI voice models. The audio they produce is machine generated. The Supertonic voice models are licensed by Supertone Inc. under the BigScience OpenRAIL-M License. As required by that license, you agree not to use the voice models or the audio they generate:

  • In any way that violates any applicable national, federal, state, local or international law or regulation;
  • For the purpose of exploiting, harming or attempting to exploit or harm minors in any way;
  • To generate or disseminate verifiably false information and/or content with the purpose of harming others;
  • To generate or disseminate personal identifiable information that can be used to harm an individual;
  • To generate or disseminate information and/or content, and place it in any context, without expressly and intelligibly disclaiming that it is machine generated;
  • To defame, disparage or otherwise harass others;
  • To impersonate or attempt to impersonate (e.g. deepfakes) others without their consent;
  • For fully automated decision making that adversely impacts an individual's legal rights or otherwise creates or modifies a binding, enforceable obligation;
  • For any use intended to or which has the effect of discriminating against or harming individuals or groups based on online or offline social behavior or known or predicted personal or personality characteristics;
  • To exploit any of the vulnerabilities of a specific group of persons based on their age, social, physical or mental characteristics, in order to materially distort the behavior of a person pertaining to that group in a manner that causes or is likely to cause that person or another person physical or psychological harm;
  • For any use intended to or which has the effect of discriminating against individuals or groups based on legally protected characteristics or categories;
  • To provide medical advice and medical results interpretation;
  • To generate or disseminate information for the purpose to be used for administration of justice, law enforcement, immigration or asylum processes, such as predicting an individual will commit fraud/crime commitment.

7. Open-Source Software and Voices

VocaRead includes open-source software, such as sherpa-onnx, and openly licensed voices. You may not sell, lease, license, sub-license, decompile, disassemble or reverse engineer the voice models included in VocaRead. Their authors, licenses and license texts are listed on our Open-source licenses page.

8. Limitation of Liability

VocaRead is provided "as is" without warranties. We are not responsible for any damages arising from the use of the app.

9. Changes

We may update these terms. Continued use of VocaRead after changes constitutes acceptance.
